La Panificadora - sleeps 6 / 7
Nobody knows when this converted mill and bakery in the hamlet of La Molineta was built. The water that powered the mills was channeled from the mountains by the Moors in the 11th century and the Count of Frigiliana (presumably fallen on hard times) sold it to the De la Torre family in 1911 for less than £20 – complete with 11 bags of grain and 15 sacks of flour.
The heritage of the house has been carefully retained – with terracotta floors, timber beamed ceilings, large rooms linked by arches, thick whitewashed walls and tiny pot-bellied balconies.
A vine-clad staircase leads up to the front door. If you are here in late August / early September, pick the grapes before Antonio from the local bar gets there first. The house is furnished in an eclectic mixture of old and modern furniture and has many original paintings, including a mural by the well-known English painter, Jake Sutton.

On the ground floor are the dining room, kitchen and a living room with wood burning stove. French doors lead to the garden, completely walled and private, on three levels; a slab of pink marble makes the perfect dining table next to the built-in barbeque. The sun terrace with an Alhambra-style fountain leads to the pool. All are surrounded by bougainvillea, jasmine and oleander.
One of the double bedrooms, with en-suite bathroom, also has doors leading straight to the garden. On the first floor there is a large landing separating a twin bedroom, and a double bedroom with dressing room. The single bed in the dressing room has proved to be a big hit with parents of young children. The second bathroom is next to a large roof terrace with views over a valley of avocado trees to the mountains.
