The water that powered the mills was channeled from the mountains by the Moors in the 11th century and the Count of Frigiliana (presumably fallen on hard times) sold it to the De la Torre family in 1911 for less than £20 – complete with 11 bags of grain and 15 sacks of flour.

The heritage of the house has been carefully retained – with terracotta floors, timber beamed ceilings, large rooms linked by arches, thick whitewashed walls and tiny pot-bellied balconies.

A vine-clad staircase leads up to the front door. If you are here in late August / early September, pick the grapes before Antonio from the local bar gets there first. The house is furnished in an eclectic mixture of old and modern furniture and has many original paintings, including a mural by the well-known English painter, Jake Sutton.

On the ground floor are the dining room, kitchen and a living room with wood burning stove. French doors lead to the garden, completely walled and private, on three levels; a slab of pink marble makes the perfect dining table next to the built-in barbeque. The sun terrace with an Alhambra-style fountain leads to the pool. All are surrounded by bougainvillea, jasmine and oleander.

One of the double bedrooms, with en-suite bathroom, also has doors leading straight to the garden. On the first floor there is a large landing separating a twin bedroom, and a double bedroom with dressing room. The single bed in the dressing room has proved to be a big hit with parents of young children. The second bathroom is next to a large roof terrace with views over a valley of avocado trees to the mountains.

Andalucia is the largest autonomous region of Spain with a fascinating history and rich cultural heritage. The people are laid back and welcoming, the countryside is magnificent and the climate is mild in winter and hot in summer.

Granada and the Alhambra Palace are not to be missed but the Old Town and harbour side in nearby Malaga are well worth a visit. Here you will find the Picasso Museum.

There is winter skiing in the nearby Sierra Nevada, water sports all along the coast and golf on championship courses.

Set on the edge of a National Park, Frigiliana has been awarded prizes for the most beautiful village in Spain. Cobbled streets with flower filled balconies and intimate shady courtyards transport the visitor back to the scented Arabian nights of the Moorish conquerors. There are fine restaurants and rustic bars with great local dishes and wines.

Each town and village has it´s own Saint´s day and colourful noisy fiestas. San Antonio on the 13th June in Frigiliana and San Isidro on the 15th May in Nerja.

La Panificadora er et vidunderligt hus - billederne lyver ikke. Vi har besøgt huset 2 gange og vi har følt os fuldstændig hjemme hver gang. Huset er smukt indrettet, haven er frodig helt privat og på balkonen er der stort set sol fra morgen til aften. Frigiliana ligger 15 minutters gåtur derfra - en smuk, hvid og autentisk bjergby. Nerja ligger 15 minutters kørsel derfra - også en smuk by med gode indkøbsmuligheder og badestrande. Der er mange udflugtsmuligheder - hvis man altså kan nænne at forlade huset.
